Increased Access to Basic Health Services (en)
17 participating departmental hospitals have signed performance-based contracts and have been offering obstetric and pediatric services. Medicins related to basic services have been provided to each of the participating institutions. Equipment has been sent to each hospital in order to facilitate the provision sof better services and support project administration. Reports from each institutions have shown a reduction in mortality cases amongst pregnant women and children under 5 years of age. A total of 70,000 women have given birth at no cost, and 200,000 children under 5 years of age also received free services. 75% of the hospitals have surpassed their baseline in obstertric services and 56% of those providing services to infants. This project is part of Canada's Maternal, Newborn and Child Health commitment.
